As a european, it seems to me that the problem with democracy in the US is the two party system, which is the consequence of your district voting system. A direct voting system, would allow smaller parties to be in parlement providing more diversity and more pressure on the bigger parties. However, the current two parties have in interest in not changing the voting system, so things will never change. I am afraid you are doomed, and the rest of the world is doomed with you.
